Gentlemen,
We may not be able to travel abroad for captains weekend this year due to all that is going on with covid, however we will be going somewhere, and the plan is to hit the town of Kilkenny.
Proposed dates are Friday 3rd, Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th of September.
Friday morning travel down to Tullow Co Carlow where we will play the Mount Wolsey championship golf course, First Tee time booked for 12 o clock so not too early of a start and plenty of time to grab some breakfast on the way down. We should be finished up by about 5.30 at the latest and head 45 min down the road to Kilkenny city where we will be staying in the Hibernian hotel slap bang in the middle of the city, we should be suited and booted and be sitting down to dinner at about 7.30 and out for a few pints after that.
Saturday Morning head for Kilkenny golf club ten minutes away where we kick off with the first Tee time at 12 o clock, again not an early start so we can have a lie in and a late breakfast before taking to the fairways. Like the evening before we should be heading out for dinner for 7.30 and out on the town to take up were we left off the night before.
Sunday morning late breakfast before checking out and hitting the road to be home for around 2pm
Due to restrictions on foreign travel a lot of people are stay cationing and with Kilkenny being a popular place, hotels are booking up very quickly. It would be great if anyone that is interested in going would let me know as soon as possible so we have the correct numbers to finalise the bookings for the golf and especially the hotel.
Currently the cost of the two rounds of golf and two nights B & B is coming in at €278 per person.

On Sunday we returned from Captain John Garvey’s weekend away in Albufeira, Portugal where we spent 4 Nights and played 3 rounds of golf at Vale da Pinta, Gramacho & Silves golf courses. A great time was had by all 10 who traveled. There was some great golf played in superb but hot 30+ degree sunshine – sun screen was a must! Leader after day 1 was Darren Quinn after a great score of 32pts, however he made a fatal mistake of going on the beer with ‘Red Legs McKenna’ that night and that was the end of his challenge(see below)!
The most consistent player over the 3 rounds and winner of this years Captain’s prize was Neil Brady with an excellent score of 90 points, 2nd place went to the ever consistent Enda McHugh with 81 points and 3rd went to Michael McHugh with 79 points (hampered by a ‘mystery’ vomiting bug from day one….) , well done to all but in particular to Neil Brady who finally captured a captains prize thanks to 3 consistent rounds of 31, 30 and 29 despite having to act as ‘Mammy’ to Mark for the weekend…. Thanks to everyone for a great few days and hope to see you all back there in 2 years!!

Saturday October 20th
Our final outing of 2018 was held at Longford Golf Club. Once again we were lucky with the weather and the standard of golf was very high, especially by our 2018 Player of the year Enda McHugh who had the best score on the day with 38pts – all things considered it was probably the round of the year. 2nd place with a great score of 35pts was Mick Joyce with 3rd place going to Darren Quinn also with a great round of 34 pts. Nearest the pin went to Aidan McKenna,
Congratulations to Enda on winning a deserved Player of the Year title, he was pushed all the way by brother Michael McHugh who was only 2pts behind. 3rd was Martin Culliney.

Sunday August 26th
On Sunday we played our marquee course for the year, Concra Woods. As always the course offered a tough challenge and there were lots of excellent scores. Unfortunately some members couldn’t attend, in particular Aidan McKenna who decided to head to the Phoenix Park to see the Pope instead – hopefully you prayed for us all Aidan! Winner on the day with a superb score was Mick McHugh with 37pts, followed closely by Tony Lennon with 36pts and 3rd was Barry Maxwell with a great score of 32pts off 4, nearest the pin was won by Brendan Larkin.

Sunday July 22nd
We had more ‘brown’ fairways this month but this time it was Knightsbrook, Trim. The course was presented in great condition. Proving that practice makes perfect, Aidan McKenna shot a great score of 39pts, runner up was Brian Duffy with 34pts and 3rd was Mick Joyce with 32pts, nearest the pin was won by Tony Lennon (them new clubs are already paying for themselves!!)

Sunday July 1st
Today we played the ‘brown’ fairways of Headfort New course in Kells, the weather making it feel like we were in Portugal not Ireland. Conditions were tough with the heat and hard ground but there was still plenty of good scores. Winning score on the day was 33 points by Martin Culliney, 2nd was John Garvey with 32, 3rd was Enda McHugh also with 32 points and nearest the pin was shared by Brendan Larkin & Dermot McCrann!

Sunday June 17th
On Sunday we traveled to Rathcore Golf Club for our postponed February outing, thankfully the snow from the February blizzard had all disappeared! Rathcore proved a great test which was reflected in the overall low scoring. The winning score on the day was 30 pts scored by Brian Duffy, 2nd placed went to John Crowe with 28 pts, 3rd was Darren Quinn with 27 pts and Nearest the Pin was Mick McHugh.
